Are Written Books Irrelevant These Days?

The fact is, it has been happening for a while. People are turning more and more to the internet as a source of information, over books.

Instead of heading to the local library for information, as in days past, many people are now just turning on their computers from the comforts of home. They are usually pleased with the information they can find on the internet, from a given website. Does this shift in the gaining of information mean the end of books?

My guess is no. The internet is not leading us to the end of the book period any time soon. Simply put, there are just too many academics who rely heavily upon books in their studies and careers for books to die out overnight.

Ask any university or college student and they would gladly tell you that their teachers want reliable sources of where they got their information. If the student told them they used a random website as a source that would be unacceptable.

Anyone out there can own a website and claim they are an expert on a topic. With a little bit of luck, a bit of research, and possibly a payment, they can even make their website come up as one of the top links in a Google search on the topic.

The site may look nice, and they may sound like they know what they are talking about, but who is to say that they really do? Websites are largely unregulated and it is not easy to tell what has been fact checked.

On the other hand we have books, which are generally written by accredited experts. The facts are checked and reviewed many times prior to printing. With books it is easier to weed out the good from the bad, and it is also easier to direct other people to the good, informative reads.

For the fact checks, and for the many people who will always love the feel of a good novel between their hands, I do not think that books will be going anywhere. At least not any time soon. As a book person, I hold out hope that the younger generations come to appreciate books the same way many of us already have.

The Best WoW Guides

The very first WOW guides that came out some years ago were mostly books or ebooks, which provided good information but were a hassle to use, since players had to switch back and forth from the game screen to the ebook or online guide. Needless to say, this slowed down the use of the guide, defeating the purpose of the guide, which was supposed to help players level faster. Fortunately, the latest guides for WOW are a big improvement.

Today’s newer guides are known as “In-Game” guides. These guides are delivered within the game, typically through a window that provides precise instructions on what to do next, and where to go. In addition, in-game arrows and waypoints display exactly where the player should go next, providing a further means to quest efficiently. By using the latest WOW guides, players have been able to level characters at breakneck speeds that have not seen before.

After doing some research, two in-game guides stood out as being a cut above the rest, and they will be discussed in this article.

The first guide we recommend is Zygor’s Guide, an in-game guide delivered through a window that lists an optimized quest path to follow, allowing you to complete the maximum number of quests in the least amount of time. As an added convenience, the window tracks your quest progress automatically. Also included in this guide is an arrow that points to the location you need to go to next. We suggest you purchase the largest bags you can afford since the quest path can often keep you away from town for extended periods. When you return to town, you will typically have 4-5 quests to turn in.

The second guide on our recommended list is Dugi’s Ultimate WOW guide. In some ways it is very similar to Zygor’s guide, and includes many of the same features such as the optimized questing path displayed in a window. Dugi’s guide also has the in-game arrow directing you to the next spot. The guide includes some nice extras as well, such as a gold and pvp guide, however, we did find the guide to have some bugs compared to the Zygor guide.

While it is true that you can play the game well without an in-game guide, using a good guide does make you level much more rapidly than you would without one. When we tested the game, we found that we leveled roughly twice as quickly as we might have without the aid of the guide. We also found that using these guides made the game more enjoyable since it removed much of the frustration that can occur in the game (such as not knowing where to go next, or not knowing where to find a certain mobs).
